When you can't sleep - I mean really can't sleep for hours and hours every night - it has far stranger and further reaching effects than simply making you tired and grumpy during the day. You'll do anything to try to get some sleep, but that only ever seems to make it worse. You get out of sync with the real world - your body clock gets totally messed up. When you feel you can sleep it's the middle of the day and you've got other things you have to do, and when it's night you lie wide awake as if you'd been sleeping all day. Except that you're tired. You become so tired that, paradoxically, you can't sleep. And that's when you start to think. You think about anything and everything, because it seems like you've got so much time to do nothing else but think, that a million thoughts can race through you mind in a single night. But because you're so tired, you mind starts doing weird things to your thoughts, and you start twisting the real world until you've convinced yourself that the next day you've got to do something you would never have dreamed of before. You have to end that long term relationship, or quit that promising job you had, because you've convinced yourself that it's the only way you'll ever get back to a normal life.
You can break to cycle, but you have to realise what's going on first, and that's far more difficult than letting you thoughts run away with you.
